Jason Geh and his talented musicians backing Noryn Aziz Live Vocal Performance at the Monsoon Cup Private Corporate Dinner at Ri-Yaz Heritage Resort & Spa, Terengganu, Malaysia (6th December 2008).
It's been awhile since I've visited Kuala Terengganu. 20 years ago? Who knows. It's the Monsoon season and my flight there was kind of scary. There just seems to be haze outside the window throughout the journey and we face dramatic turbulence during landing. I was grabbing on to my seat only to find with astonishment that my bass player seating next to me was sleeping, oblivious to what was happening!
The band was scheduled to have sound check with Noryn at 10am but the instruments and backline was delayed. That actually gave us some time to hang out and watch the race. For those of you who are not aware of this yearly occasion, it's actually an International Yacht Race held in Kuala Terengganu spanning a few days, this year from 3rd till the 7th of December.
That few hours at the location gave us a sense of the Monsoon weather. Clear one moment and rain with strong typhoon-like winds the next. It was a different experience to seat there by the pier having breakfast, watching the race and absorbing the erratic weather thrown at us by nature.
We finally got to do Sound check at 1pm before proceeding to Grand Continental Hotel where we were staying. There was a local restaurant across the street where we got to taste the authentic "Nasi Dagang".
We were back at Ri-Yaz at 7pm to stand by for our live performance. My trio strollers provided vocal ambience music during the pre-dinner cocktail reception at the Cindai Ballroom where the event was held. Noryn Aziz backed by our live band performed two sets that evening to a crowd of 70 elites.
It was great for me to have this opportunity to team up with Noryn for this grand event. Noryn released her debut contemporary Jazz album last year and have been very active in the local music scene. She is constantly involve with TV music programmes with regular request for her to perform in numerous high profile corporate shows. Noryn, incidentally the latest Marie France's ambassador is currently working on her sophomore album due to be release soon.
